Background of the Study
In many African countries, including Nigeria, traditional medicine beliefs often influence patients' decisions regarding healthcare. Despite the availability of modern medical treatments, some patients continue to rely on traditional medicine, either exclusively or in combination with conventional care. These practices are influenced by cultural beliefs, spiritual considerations, and perceived effectiveness. In some cases, patients' belief in the efficacy of traditional remedies can hinder adherence to prescribed modern medical treatments, which can negatively impact their health outcomes (Ige et al., 2023).
At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, many patients may seek both modern and traditional medical treatments, creating a complex healthcare environment. Understanding how traditional medicine beliefs impact adherence to modern treatment regimens is crucial for improving patient compliance, optimizing therapeutic outcomes, and reducing the reliance on potentially harmful or ineffective traditional remedies. This study will explore the impact of traditional medicine beliefs on adherence to modern medical treatment at FMC Makurdi.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of modern medical treatments at FMC Makurdi, patients' beliefs in traditional medicine may impact their adherence to prescribed therapies, potentially leading to suboptimal health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the role of traditional medicine beliefs in influencing patients' adherence to modern medical treatments and explore ways to improve compliance.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of traditional medicine beliefs on patients' adherence to modern medical treatment at FMC Makurdi.
2. To identify the factors that influence patients' decisions to use traditional medicine alongside modern medical treatment.
3. To recommend strategies to improve adherence to modern medical treatments in patients with strong traditional medicine beliefs.
Research Questions
1. How do traditional medicine beliefs affect patients' adherence to modern medical treatments at FMC Makurdi?
2. What factors contribute to the use of traditional medicine alongside modern medical treatments?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve adherence to modern medical treatments in patients with traditional medicine beliefs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Patients with strong traditional medicine beliefs are less likely to adhere to modern medical treatments at FMC Makurdi.
2. The use of traditional medicine alongside modern treatments negatively impacts the effectiveness of medical care at FMC Makurdi.
3. Educational interventions can improve adherence to modern medical treatments in patients influenced by traditional medicine beliefs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients at FMC Makurdi who use traditional medicine alongside modern treatments. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with patients and healthcare providers. Limitations include the challenge of measuring adherence and the potential for bias in self-reported data.
